Always by D.A. Lawson is a realistic romance with a lot of depth. It opens in an almost sinister way with Julie McCourt feeling threatened by her ex-fiancé who won’t leave her alone. She also feels guilty at letting this situation come about. But Julie is a strong young woman and takes the decision to focus on her studies and put this all behind her. She can make a better future for herself. She puts all her energies into her pharmacy course, not reckoning on meeting another pharmacy student who might want her to change her mind. Kevin Sanders is a bit of a party animal but begins to see that a loving, steady relationship can have its advantages. He wants Julie to be the one he finds that settled-down happiness with, but she has her own ideas. And they both have issues to put to rest before they can begin to live their future, together or otherwise.
The characters of "Always" are very persuasive and real. The author has amazing attention to detail in portraying personalities, not only in the things they do and say, but in what we are directly told about them. There is tension in the story and a brooding threat but generally there is an optimistic, positive feel, largely derived from the strengths of faith, belief, forgiveness and love. We know that Julie will work out what to do, although it’s by no means a predictable or easy path that she takes. Lawson is a talented author who handles language beautifully and pulls you into her story from the very beginning. This is a very readable book with great warmth and meaning.
