All Our Faults by Charlotte Brough is YA fiction at its best. Jack Porter appears to have the perfect life. As Lakemere High’s star athlete, he has girls falling over him and a bright future ahead. But he has an eating disorder that he refuses to acknowledge, and his twin Jared has a drinking problem. Their other brother Alex is the genius in the family, and Lakemere High is ahead in their Prank Wars with West Valley. What could go wrong? When their estranged mother returns, it sets off a chain of events that has far-reaching effects on the boys and their entire community. The rivalry between the two schools is about to kick up several notches, and it can only end in disaster unless something – or someone – can stop it. Jack wants to be the peacemaker, but Jared doesn’t – he wants revenge and blood.
All Our Faults by Charlotte Brough is a hard-hitting story that will make you stop and think. This is one of the best YA books I have read in a long time, and it deals with addiction sensitively without fluffing the details. It isn’t for younger readers due to its content, but hopefully, it might open eyes about the nature of addiction and the downward spiral that’s so tough to escape. The characters are amazing, real people with unique personalities and flaws, and you will get to know and understand them well. The plot is different and fast-paced with plenty of action. There is some violence and bad language, but not out of keeping with the story. This is a real page-turner, and at times it will feel as if you’ve been punched in the gut. Told in first person narrative, it switches between characters, allowing you to become fully invested in each one and understand how the strands of the story come together. Thoroughly enjoyable, if hard to read at times.
