Agrathias by Conor Nicholl is an epic fantasy with an exciting setting and wonderful themes, and it will appeal greatly to readers who want to read about the fight between forces of good and evil and the high stakes of magic. It has been nine hundred years since Ubinion and Ramas defeated the dark Lord Dogane. Now darkness is returning to Agrathias and, this time, it could be without any strong resistance. The people have slowly allowed evil to corrupt them so that the wicked sorcerer and his reign may have no end. Are there still brave men and a magic powerful enough in the land to oust him?
Conor Nicholl is a great writer and one with the gift of an incredible imagination. He has woven a yarn that will captivate readers. There is such a lot to enjoy in this epic story. I was fascinated with the setting, a mythical place with a magical culture and phenomenal characters, an exciting place in which to take occasional flights from reality. The plot is fast-paced and it has surprising moments for readers and twists that no one would see coming. The language has a spell of its own, and whether it’s about the tight prose or the natural dialogues, the reader is pulled in. There are beautiful passages that capture the elements of the setting in a stunning, captivating manner. The characters seem to leap off the pages as though the reader is watching them on screen. This is one of my best epic fantasy reads of the year.
