Africa’s Child by Maria Nhambu is the first part in the Dancing Soul Trilogy, an inspiring and heartwarming memoir that chronicles one woman’s triumph over all sorts of adversity and her path toward success, a story laced with timeless life lessons. Set against the backdrop of modern day Africa, this memoir introduces readers to what it is like to grow up as an orphan in a hostile environment. The story starts at an orphanage in the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania, East Africa, where the protagonist will encounter her first initiation into the burdens of life. Without any knowledge of her parents’ whereabouts, the little girl has no point of family reference. Bullied, sexually abused, and often sick, Maria refuses to go down. Determined to be the creator of her destiny, she staunchly refuses to let any form of programming define her, so she begins to make choices that would shape her life and guide her toward success.
Maria Nhambu is a gifted writer with a unique voice and style. Whether she talks about a dramatic scene or describes the lush landscapes of her native home, the writing is captivating and laced with powerful insights. She will make you cry and smile at the same time, because she writes with an uncanny sense of humor. Africa’s Child is a powerful statement, a testament of what happens when we consciously choose to embrace ourselves. In this first part of the memoir, the author invites readers to face life with courage, to look into the future with hope, but above all, to take full control of their lives by fighting self pity and being responsible for their actions.
This is one of those edifying stories that comes across as a light in the darkness of our fears, our uncertainty, and our hopelessness. Nhambu teaches readers how to look past their tragedy to see the seeds of a flourishing future. The book is absorbing, the plot gripping, and the protagonist is a compelling character that won’t leave anyone indifferent. I am looking forward to the next part in this exciting trilogy.
