Affirmation Alphabet: Empowering Words for Growing Minds by Sarah Loy is a sweet and simple children's book that goes through the full alphabet, using encouraging adjectives that start with each letter. The book reads like a parent speaking to their child and contains expressions of love and confidence-boosting words. The format of writing in free-form, rhythmic poetry gives the story a simple platform for words that might otherwise go over a child's head, allowing young readers and listeners to comfortably discuss what those words mean. Each page contains four or five letters used in empowering words and these are listed again at the bottom of the page, accompanied by an illustration that a child might recognize as something they could produce themselves.
Affirmation Alphabet by Sarah Loy was a fun little book to read to a four-year-old girl, who listened intently and asked what a few of the words meant. I admit that her attention was held mostly by the fact that the book is less than 10 pages in length, but it did engage her in a small—albeit half-hearted conversation—but that's to be expected when she's on the cusp of sleep. It was a perfect night to read such a book and it's one of those stories that feels good to read. These are things that I want to say to her, and being provided with a reminder that we can enjoy together made this little gem a keeper. I'd recommend this book for parents, guardians, and carers of young children.
