Acts of Love by Lucy Somers is a moving memoir about holding on to yourself in dark times and overcoming them. Trigger warnings apply as the author shares 23 stories of the mind and soul as the memoir journeys through abuse, suicide, and other mental health issues. Though she was born in excellent mental and physical condition, from the ages of 2 to 14 she lived in a handful of religious settings, from a home for disabled children to a home for elderly hospice patients to a home for unwed mothers, her mother being with her in three of the houses. She poignantly shares the issues that led to such a nontraditional upbringing and gives us accounts of those she grew to know in these homes. Her history will touch you and help you to understand human nature and how people can thrive in challenging circumstances.

Somers peels back her layers to reveal both her childhood and beyond in personal phrasing that is highly relatable. She shares secrets, heartache, love, and positivity, hoping to find a reason for her childhood suffering and, in doing so, offers hope to readers who may be confused about their own. She explains that her writing is cathartic and can be for others who seek meaning in their experiences. You'll meet people from her past, like Antoinette who lived in hospice care with her, and you'll hear about her experience with death and dying, and her highs and lows. If you're interested in an inspirational memoir to help you make sense of the troubled waters of life, you will be moved and benefited by Acts of Love by Lucy Somers.
