Character strengths are something that we do not talk about much with children, but we should. Cindy Goldberg’s book, ABC…That Sounds Like Me! A Strengths Spotting Alphabet Book is a great way to introduce kids to character strengths. Each letter of the alphabet highlights one strength and then includes an example of that strength. Here is an example: I is for Integrity. That sounds like me when I show honesty with my sister. I tell her that it’s her turn even though she thinks it’s mine. Each character strength is illustrated with a diverse group of children. To extend the book even further there is a place at the end for kids to draw a picture of their strengths and write about them.
ABC…That Sounds Like Me! A Strengths Spotting Alphabet Book should be in every elementary classroom. The diversity of strengths that are illustrated is wonderful. Some of the strengths may be things kids have heard about like kindness and forgiveness but several strengths will be new for kids. They may recognize themselves in the descriptions but never have been able to identify it as a character strength. Each child will feel like they have value after going through this alphabet and identifying their strengths. Even adults will gain some much-needed reminders about character strengths. My favorite was Viewpoint, which means we can each feel differently about something and that is okay! Cindy Goldberg has used her expertise to create a useful and accessible book in ABC...That Sounds Like Me!
