We all have dreams about what we want to be when we grow up. Abby wants to be a teacher, just like her mother. Abby’s not old enough to go to school yet. Sometimes she visits her mother’s classroom and pretends to be one of the students. When she’s at home, she sets up her dolls and pretends to be their teacher. Her imagination helps her be as good a teacher as her mother. Not only is she aspiring to be a good teacher, but also a good student, for she can’t wait till she starts school.
Colleen Baxter Sullivan’s picture book story, Abby Teaches Her Dolls, will appeal to the young pre-school reader. The language is simple, so the young reader can start to follow along and learn to read while someone reads the book with them. The colorful illustrations help move the story along and the depiction of little Abby in some of the pictures is sweet. This is a great book to encourage young readers to be creative in their playtime and to imagine the many possible careers they can choose to be when they grow up. “Abby could only dream about going to school. She could not wait.” And while she dreamed about going to school, she also dreamed of being a teacher as she played out her imaginative dreams with her dolls. “Abby loved to play school with her dolls. She was the teacher and her dolls were the students.” In her imaginative playtime, Abby makes a very fine teacher. A charming little gem of a book.
