In A World Without Failures by Esther Cordova, readers follow a boy named David on a journey to discover why it is important to experience failure. David has struggled to understand why it is important to know how to fail and thrive. With his sidekick, his cat Einstein, David enters the world through a dream. In a search to find his dad, he sees life played out without any failures. He experiences what life would be like without basic conveniences such as a supermarket, refrigerator, and TV. David understands the importance of making mistakes and the value that comes with trying and succeeding. David has engaging encounters along the way, including a lion, a boy learning to swim, and a life without streets. Through his journey, he discovers the impact on the world if no one grew through their attempts to be successful.
A World Without Failures by Esther Cordova is a fun picture book story for children. It encompasses common areas children wrestle with and helps them grasp exactly what they need to be successful. This book is engaging because it helps kids see what life would be like if people gave up on their creations when they made mistakes. Often, we give kids books on success, but this book gives a bit of a twist in that it allows the reader to think about what would happen if people just quit and gave up. Ms. Cordova uses bright colorful illustrations to capture her readers' attention. She has chosen animals, places, and activities that will interest young readers and keep them engaged. Her discussion starters are also an excellent addition to help children further apply the use of a growth mindset to their learning and understand the value of trying and being successful.
