A Witch’s Brew: Conquest of the Veil Book III is a work of fiction in the epic fantasy genre and serves as the third installment in the Conquest of the Veil series. It is suitable for readers from older teens and upwards and was penned by author Michael Scott Clifton. Continuing their quest to defeat the Dark Queen, Prince Tal and Alexandria head to the city of Markingham, only to find it days away from falling. With their plan to find allies to attack the Dark Queen on hold, the two set about trying to help the city recover, but their intentions are scuppered by the arrival of a large army known as the Baleful, that is set on destroying what’s left of the area.
A Witch's Brew is a highly engaging fantasy novel settling nicely on the border of the young adult and adult genres, and it has plenty for both audiences to enjoy. One of the things that I really appreciated was how the story differed from other books in the fantasy genre by adding hints of mystery and thriller into the mix. Author Michael Scott Clifton is a master at crafting three-dimensional and interesting characters that are a joy to journey through the world with. Lady Margaret was one of my favorite characters to follow, and I enjoyed the author's ability to make us invest in a character that wasn't inherently good. The world itself was crafted beautifully and easy to envision, with visceral descriptions and all the sights, sounds, and even smells of this brave new realm. Clifton delivered a consistent and robust magic system that made sense and was easy to understand. I would not hesitate to recommend A Witch's Brew to fans of the fantasy genre or those looking for an action-packed story that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
