A Treacherous Engagement: A Regency Romance is the first book in the Gentlemen of London series by Laura Beers. Young Dinah Ashmore’s older sister Evie was missing, and no one was taking her seriously. After she had enough of it, she decided to hire a Bow Street Runner to do the job for her. Dinah thought the young man she trusted to find her sister was a Bow Street Runner, but as it turns out, he was Nathaniel Calvert, the Earl of Hawthorne. Bright and ambitious, Nathaniel was there on the orders of the crown to find a rebellious group and bring them to justice. He wasn’t prepared to be sidetracked by this vivacious young lady demanding that Nathaniel help her. However, she wasn’t interested in sitting back to let Nathaniel do everything. She wanted to be part of the mission and help find her sister. But as sparks fly and attraction blooms between the two, Nathaniel needs to decide does he serve the crown or fall in love with a woman who has no idea who he is.
I love Regency romances. There is something about these stories that attract my attention. I love the culture of that time, the dresses, the chivalry, and the overall environment. Nathaniel was a dream come true. The perfect protagonist who knows what he is doing, he commanded my attention and fully had it. He indulged Dinah in the beginning, but when he figured out that wouldn’t work, he treated her like an equal and even valued her counsel. Dinah was no damsel in distress. She was commanding, strong, and very much aware of what was happening around her. Author Laura Beers did a fantastic job of keeping the spark alive between the two protagonists as both of them fought toward their individual goals. The dialogues were powerful, the descriptions were exceptional, and the overall feel of A Treacherous Engagement was very pleasant. What a wonderful romance. The best so far!
