A Spark of Justice by JD Hawkins is a murder mystery. John Nieves used to be a New York city cop, now he’s an insurance investigator. The Great Rollo is dead, killed by one of the tigers he worked with in the circus, but was it an accident? Did the beast just turn on him or was there more to it? Nieves is sent to investigate the death before the life insurance claim is paid out, and it seems that the Great Rollo may not have been quite as great as people thought. He had enemies and a number of attempts are made to shut Nieves up. Why? Because he has uncovered some bizarre behavior that suggests the accident wasn’t all it seemed. Family secrets are about to be aired for all to see and Nieves refuses to stop until he finds out who killed Rollo.

I enjoyed A Spark of Justice by JD Hawkins and there was a good story line to it, one that kept my attention. There are plenty of suspects to choose from and lots of different story lines going on. However, the story was well written enough to hold my interest to find out what really happened. The characters were defined well, there was enough information about them to see how they fitted into the plot, and I found the descriptions of circus life interesting and lively. This is a fun book with a good setting, something a bit different from the usual murder mysteries, and that in itself is a huge plus.
