A Place of Rest by Robert E. Kearns is the story of a man who is not happy about his current situation. Tuck is a man of habits and he hates to break them. He doesn’t like mornings, he doesn’t like the cold and he never liked funerals. He was a creature of habit and all of these things forced him to break his habits. So when Tuck had to go to the funeral of a friend’s mother early in the morning on a cold day, he could not help but wish for it all to end soon so that he could go back to sleep. But he has no idea of the surprises that await him at the funeral. There are some things that he doesn’t know and when he finds out, he will be in for a surprise that he might not be able to contain.
Robert E. Kearns is a brilliant writer and he has a gift for writing some of the best short stories I have ever read. He has a way with words that will transport you into the story with the characters and make you live their lives. Even with a limited number of pages, Kearns was able to convey something very special about Tuck. I was immersed in his story and the ending really shocked me. I enjoyed Tuck’s reactions; he is so relatable and so real that I saw myself in him. A Place of Rest is yet another brilliant short story that I thoroughly enjoyed!
