A picture of a dead horse: Living • Loving • Laughing • And Spinal Injury by Trevor Herdman begins with his last year in school, a time for unbridled fun with his friends. During one such occasion of revelry, an accident at a swimming pool leaves him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. After long periods of rehabilitation where he got used to his wheelchair, he continues his studies and lands a job with the help of the Disabled Resettlement Office. He meets many women in his quest for life and ends up with a permanent relationship. He now continues his journey with her as a happier paraplegic with active involvement in many outdoor activities.

A picture of a dead horse: Living • Loving • Laughing • And Spinal Injury by Trevor Herdman is an inspiring tale of determination and an invisible strength. At no stage could I detect a sign of despondency or helplessness, though Trevor’s injury easily justifies it. On the contrary, a rather lingering sense of humor permeates the book. Devoting one's rehabilitation days to mastering the technique of maneuvering the wheelchair up a kerb as well as the advanced one of dropping down backwards certainly needs some spirit. Meeting his future wife and asking permission from her children to propose to her is the best example of all. This is a page turner; I felt a great sense of loss after I saw the photograph of the Paralympics Air Weapons Team. No more pages left to read!

As a young man, the author was leading a full and active life, when a tragic accident occurred whilst performing a simple dive into a swimming pool, and in a matter of seconds, that life was turned totally and forever upside down. Trevor recounts the unimaginable inner desolation, torment and pain of trying to come to terms with finding oneself now paralysed, with not an ounce of self-pity and with great humour throughout. Once out of the long period of hospitalization, Trevor refuses to allow his disability to get in the way of participating fully again in life- regarding it almost as an inconvenience, to resume and build his career, finding love and getting married, and pursuing his great interest in sport, accomplishing many goals including making the Olympic squad. Totally inspirational.

I was so pleased to have the opportunity to read this great book. I was hooked from page one and couldn't put it down like most of the other readers. I have never met Trevor but feel privileged to have read such an inspirational and witty autobiography. He could have just given up after such a terrible accident but instead he looked to the future with determination and strength. His great sense of humour which just shone through the book also made me laugh out loud. I'm really looking forward to the next one!

Read this on a long haul trip across the Pond and laughed out loud at parts making people look at me as if I was mad (some would agree). Trev's writing style is easy to read and he tells his story with honesty and humour. I cannot wait to read the next part......soon I hope!!!

An inspirational autobiography by Trevor Herdman. An extraordinary true story of courage strength and determination following a spinal cord injury at a very young age. Once reading this book you cannot stop its so humerous and gripping. Very true to life as I was a nurse on the Spinal Unit Wakefield many of the characters featured I knew. A must have read and can't wait for Part 2. Download it now it's brilliant!

Trev your book is brilliant. As someone who has known you since University days at Hull, I learned so much about you that I never knew. Your determination, sense of humour and love of life (and beer) shines through. I can't wait to read your next book.

Marie Harrison

What an amazing individual you are Trevor. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Sometimes life hands us something we never expected, I found this book an emotional ride with humor and heartwarming moments as the author pulled no punches in telling his story. It is hard for anyone to imagine what it is like to be in his predicament. All he did was dive into a pool and his life was changed forever. For me it was interesting to read the story told by someone who is still in his wheelchair, I have read other stories of fantastic recoveries and that is wonderful and I am happy for them, but what about the thousands of others who can't do that and through no fault of their own.. Sometimes what you are handed is what you have to live with and no amount of therapy r surgery is going to fix that. For me this is the story of someone who had to accept what happened and find ways to cope and go on. That's what makes this story more compelling to me.

Karen

A really good read, such an interesting and enlightening insight into Trevor's fascinating story.

This is an unputdownable read. I raced through it in a long afternoon, and loved it. I learnt so much about the life of someone who is quadraplegic. And it made me laugh out loud on virtually every page - no mean feat, I VERY rarely LOL. I want part 2 now!

Skylon

An inspiring book, written with so much positivity and in an easy to read style. Eagerly awaiting Book 2!

I thought life as a quadriplegic would be one long, drawn out, depressing experience, but that's not how Trevor's story comes across. He stays positive, and gets the most he can out of life. I like the way nothing is held back from Trevor's account. Sex, drugs and rock and roll aren't just for rock stars, they were, and maybe still are, all part of Trevor's life as well. Looking forward to book two.

A gripping read, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. Trevor manages to turn a tradgedy into a heartwarming tale where I found myself actually laughing out loud. Can't wait for book 2, buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

Considering the subject matter isn't especially your usual fodder for comedy this book was very funny in places, and definitely left me wanting to know more. I can't imagine how anyone could not benefit from reading this, whether it's to learn more about the realities of living with a spinal injury, or else to enjoy some real laugh out loud moments. It is certainly money well spent and I can't wait for the next instalment.
