Raven was an anomaly. She was half-elf and half-human. However, this wasn’t the only thing that made her different. Nikki McCormack's A Path of Blood And Amber (Silverblood Raven Book 1) focuses on Raven being a Silverblood. When Raven’s parents were dying, her mother somehow turned her into a Silverblood. A warrior, Jaecar, had raised Raven in isolation in the forest until the fateful day when Raven found their home consumed by flames and men riding away with Jaecar’s body. Raven salvaged what she knew was important and followed their tracks with plans to avenge Jaecar. However, Raven ran into an issue with the tracks leading to a river. Forced to ask for help, who could Raven trust to keep her secret safe? As an illegal Silverblood, they would execute her for what her mother had made her become.
Nikki McCormack built an intense amount of suspense into this fantasy. Raven’s education was exceptional, apart from social skills. This makes her task even more difficult. The vivid depiction of Raven’s emotions made me feel the pain and distrust she went through. I became upset when characters were injured or killed, especially when Raven felt she could have prevented their loss. The world-building descriptions made the scenes easy to envision and I could see the story unfold into a complex community of supporting characters. The tension felt between different characters is an element that adds to the suspense. I am looking forward to reading the entire Silverblood Raven series to see how Raven grows. Fans of stories with a powerful female progressing in a challenging world will enjoy A Path of Blood And Amber.
