Childhood friends Thomas and Sarentha get into trouble when Thomas murders a co-worker. Out of work and options, a noble offers them a job with handsome pay and soon the pair finds themselves involved in an adventure cloaked in secrecy. Together with Eliza Winston, a spirited and headstrong noblewoman who has skills in diplomacy and combat, the trio journeys far across the lands of the Tamorran Empire to fulfill the quest entrusted to them.
Starting with an intriguing prologue, A Noble’s Quest (The Empire's Foundation, Book 1) by Ryan Toxopeus highlights the best features of classic epic fantasy. A quest, an adventure, ancient war, elves, dwarves, gnomes, dragons, magic - these elements make the story sufficient to fulfill the essential checklist for fans of the genre. Protagonists Thomas and Sarentha are well-fleshed out, but Eliza Winston is definitely attention-grabbing as soon as her character appears. Despite its familiarity, the plot is well structured and has some good twists to keep this epic fantasy interesting. The narrative is clean and an easy read. It does not quite have the flair of other well-established fantasy writers, but there’s a vibrancy in the prose, the characters, and the world-building.
I find some parts of the story could be more properly paced or less tangential. On the other hand, keeping the story action-packed and filled with some humor makes Toxopeus another entertaining writer in the fantasy scene. On the whole, A Noble’s Quest is a good debut for the series and an enjoyable read.
