A Mother's Love by Valerie Allen is a short story about the emotional struggles of a family with a wild child. Eileen is a widow with four children that she loves dearly. Her three daughters, Theresa, Mary Kathleen, and Bernadette, do their best to stay out of trouble and make their mother proud, but her son Brian does the opposite. Eileen is heartbroken by his behavior and lifestyle. One day, her three daughters visit her on her birthday to take her out for a treat. Before leaving the house, they drop a bombshell about their brother's latest escapade. Eileen is shocked because she cannot believe the extent her son would go to in not taking responsibility for his life and actions.

Having a family member that is loved and cherished yet only brings pain and disappointment is a common situation in many families. A Mother's Love is a heart-wrenching story with a soul-stirring message. Each character is someone you have met or are related to; the mother who blames herself for her child’s shortcomings, a sibling who covers up for her troubled brother or sister so as not to alarm their parents, and the troubled child who feels misunderstood and is struggling with addiction. They all love each other and are all connected. I loved how Valerie Allen made the story realistic and made me feel each character's pain. The story flows smoothly and is easy to read and understand. I loved reading it and recommend it to anyone who wants to engage with an emotional family tale.
