Years after a traumatic event, orphaned siblings must finally address the alarming changes which occurred that fateful night in the charming paranormal novel, A Medium's Christmas Gift (Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium's Mystery Series Book 3) by Chariss K. Walker. Becky Tibbs is a medium. On the eve of her parents' death, Becky and her two other siblings, Barbara and Bobby, discovered they all shared the family trait of seeing dead people. Becky embraced her new-found ability and, taking over the family antiques store, she added a side business of helping those with ghostly problems. Neither Barbara nor Bobby was thrilled with the new element to their five senses and spent the following years hiding it from themselves and others. Becky became introverted and Bobby and Barbara's professional futures ceased that day. Barbara keeps herself medicated and Bobby uses inebriation to block the apparitions and voices of the departed. Now, however, time is taking its toll. Barbara's mind is fuzzy and her skeptical boyfriend is suspicious. Due to the alcoholic abuse Bobby puts his body through to keep the Otherside at bay, he is concerned for his health. Taking the opportunity, Becky challenges Barbara and Bobby each to help one ghost. Meanwhile, Becky adjusts to having a personal life outside of the newly departed with a new romance blossoming in her own life. Can the three of them finally begin to live again?
The fascinating concept of solving crimes with the assistance of the deceased in A Medium's Christmas Gift by Chariss K. Walker is a complex and winning concept. Although the story focuses mainly on the Tibbs family, it has the delightful element of mystery and crime-solving in the subplots. Having the main character help those who have died to solve criminal cases gives an intriguing twist to detective stories, and is one which I most heartily enjoy. It is a fascinating novel which will entertain those who love amateur sleuth novels with a paranormal flavor. Being the third book in the series, it does fairly well as a stand-alone. However, to better understand and relate to the characters, reading the first two books would be beneficial to the reader.
