Mason possessed a special ability that set him apart from other teenagers. Whenever he crossed a skid mark in the road, the events resulting in that mark would fill his visions. He could tell if the driver was joyriding, trying to avoid hitting someone, or involved in a horrific accident. It made driving, or even walking down the road, a personal hell for him. However, when his best friend-crush, Addie, informs him of her imminent move to Nevada and insists he drive her there, Mason cannot refuse. Yet, he fears the countless skid marks stretching all over the highway. Why does he seek a particular skid mark involving a missing young woman? Will Mason’s ability prove to be a curse or a gift? Find out in A Mark in the Road by Angelique Burrell.
I loved how this book was both a young-adult drama and a suspenseful thriller with a hefty serving of paranormal topping off the story. Burrell did an amazing job of narrating Mason’s internal struggles and dilemmas. His unspoken feelings for Addie and the fear of being ridiculed gnawed at him incessantly, yet he stayed true to his heart. I loved watching the chemistry develop between Mason and Addie during what turned out to be an unforgettable trip. It was fulfilling to see two daring teens defying all odds and solving a confounding mystery armed only with determination and perseverance. I felt so invested in them that, at times, I wanted to warn them of the risks they were taking. A Mark in the Road would appeal to anyone who loves a paranormal thriller or sleuth story.
