A Lover’s Secret by Howard Reiss is a unique romance story that follows Azu and Michael in a relationship that is as unusual as it is intriguing. Azu had a strong attraction to Michael when they were young and she was sure then that she was going to marry him. They lost touch for fifty years and when she finally meets him on Facebook, fifty years later, he is found dead. Now Azu uses her skills in journalism to investigate the death of her high school sweetheart, unearthing truths about the man from the time she once knew him to what he became.
The writing is beautiful and readers will enjoy the introspective journey the narrator makes, exploring her past relationship of three years of young love with Michael. Finding him on Facebook arouses powerful emotions in her, torn between finding him and just going on with her life. But the death of the man who has had a strong hold on her emotional life is a blow that she can’t ignore and the story becomes even more interesting from this point. Her decision to find out what actually happened to him is impulsive and readers want to see how it ends. The writing is infused with both realism and humanity and the story, told in the first person narrative, becomes very engrossing and intimate.
