Most parents desire to love and care for their children in a secure environment. On the other hand, stress, exhaustion, a lack of parenting skills, or family support can overwhelm the pressures of caring for a child and lead to abuse. But why is it sometimes so difficult for abused children to report their abusers? Why do abused children still seem to love their violent parents and hold them in high regard? Frank Leonardis's well-written memoir, A Journey of Hope, answers these profound concerns. When Frank's loving mother dies of cancer, he is left in the care of his father, whose temper is easily roused. His reaction is characterized by impatience and venting his uncontrollable rage on his son. However, although Frank felt alone and abandoned, he knew God was seeing him through this terrible circumstance and that he would turn his suffering into something beautiful. How will Frank's adversity help him see life in a new light and achieve all his objectives? The answers are revealed in this book.
Most people will try to conceal their unpleasant pasts. However, Frank Leonardis does not hesitate to describe his tough childhood. He tries to be open and honest with the reader. As admirable as this kind of personality is, it still deserves praise. Frank Leonardis's memoir tugs at the reader and provides an insight into the complex life lived by those raised by parents or guardians who do not respect individual rights or personal freedom. He also considers modern broken family ties and how they affect a child's upbringing. Abuse and cruelty sometimes compensate for a lack of love and understanding. My favorite aspect of this book was how the author balanced his bad times with the precious times he had with his father. For instance, Frank's father gave him an intriguing video game collection and a PlayStation 3 for Christmas. I hoped that their relationship would progress positively after this incident. The writing style provides information without bogging the reader down in detail or sentimentality. Sufficient time and research were put into making this book a success.
