A is for Aliens: A-Z of Horror is a work of collected fiction in the horror, science fiction, and speculative adventure sub-genres and was penned by thirteen authors at Red Cape Publishing. The work is more suitable for mature readers as it does contain the use of explicit language and some scenes of violence. As such, this opening volume in an anthology-style collection delivers thirteen tales on the theme of aliens, although each of the stories really takes this idea into many unique directions. What results is a brilliant display of horror authorship from a diverse field of writing minds. The included authors are Dona Fox, Theresa Jacobs, Nancy Kilpatrick, Daren Callow, Astrid Addams, Lesley Drane, Monster Smith, Jeremy Megargee, Tim Jeffreys, Mawr Goshin, Mark Anthony Smith, P.J. Blakey-Novis and Megan Neumann.
The collected authors of this excellent work really know how to put on a show. As a general reading experience, these concise yet atmospheric stories deliver some beautiful vignettes of terrifying experiences with creatures from out of this world, and each of them takes on that theme in their own unique style. More specifically, I really enjoyed Pike Street by the aptly named author Monster Smith, whose childlike sense of tension-build was reminiscent of The Body, and truly chilling. The Hazing by author Theresa Jacobs had a similar feeling of naively wandering into danger, though for an older audience, and was truly shocking in places. Overall, I would highly recommend A is for Aliens: A-Z of Horror to horror and science fiction fans seeking a collection of accomplished writers and wonderful, chilling tales.
