A Horse Named Viking is the tale of the life of one horse, whose future seemed doomed from the beginning. His mother was an intractable mare whose temperament was vicious and unmanageable. It was so vile that she was put down after she killed a man. Many expected that the foal would be put down as well. His temperament was not much better than his mother’s had been, and his mother’s reputation did not give him an easy start in the world of show horses. Although Viking fought with any horse that came near, and had little to do with most humans, he proved to be gentle with a select few. Viking was bought by a family who was inexperienced at showing horses, but they saw something in him that made him special. Viking had a spirit that lived up to his name. With patience and love, Viking became a true champion.
Ms Akervik has put a tremendous amount of heart into her account of Viking’s life and the turmoil the O’Neil family experienced over the years, as they learned that Viking would never be tamed, but his spirit and intuitiveness allowed them to train with him instead of against him. This is a touching and uplifting story that any horse lover will read breathlessly as Viking and the O’Neils overcome many roadblocks as Viking’s reputation grows as both a champion and a force to be reckoned with. Viking has the heart of a warrior, giving his all until the end of his long and dynamic life.
