In A Fire for Christmas by William R. Hincy, Jeff sends a story to Lourdes about his childhood where he is subjected to receiving presents that are nowhere near what he wanted, with misfitting clothes, oinking slippers, and the try-it-on attitude of his parents to boot. Lourdes responds with a less than thrilling review of his work, a Christmas story of her own, and the idea of a proper socially-distanced date in the future. The shelter-in-place orders during the pandemic encourage Jeff and Lourdes to keep a correspondence going where they share stories that they write as well as getting to know one another on a personal level. Will this make a romance blossom, or will Jeff and Lourdes continue to be nothing more than story-writing, internet-based, flirty pen-pals?
A Fire For Christmas is a fun anthology of stories that will keep readers keen to see what Jeff and Lourdes are going to say or share next. I absolutely enjoyed this collection, especially the way it is laid out as a back-and-forth between two people who love to write and consider a romantic relationship that extends beyond the shelter-in-place orders. The characters in each individual story are interesting and add to each plot, and the letters between Jeff and Lourdes only serve to make the stories even more entertaining. I recommend this anthology by William R. Hincy to readers who love a collection with plenty of quick reads that stand alone but are part of a larger story going on behind the scenes. I hope this author has plenty of stories to come. I would be thrilled to read another anthology like this one in the future.
