A Debt Repaid is a work of fiction in the crime and thriller subgenres. It is aimed at mature readers and was written by author Pieter Hendrik Prinsloo. The book follows lawyer Gary Edwards as he faces the prospect of defending a childhood friend accused of murder in what appears to be an open and shut case. Determined to find the truth despite wavering in his belief in his friend's innocence, Gary must look past the mountain of evidence that has already condemned his friend in the eyes of the law in order to seek out what really happened on that fateful night.
I loved the angle of personal investment that the main character Gary Edwards had in this story, both in terms of his friendship with the accused and his sacrifices in pursuing justice. By grounding the story in the well-realized and developed lead character, A Debt Repaid manages to create a fascinating mystery that demands a high level of investment from the reader, and like any good investment, the rewards are high. Like all great mystery writers, author Pieter Hendrik Prinsloo has mastered the art of carefully and deliberately unfurling a tantalizing mystery at a pace that allows readers room to speculate on what new information means before bringing yet another brilliant twist into the story. Nothing feels certain as just when the evidence begins to point in one direction, readers are suddenly given new information that causes the already engaging mystery to become even deeper. What results is an exciting and dynamic roller coaster of a read that is impossible to put down.
