If fantasy and pirates are your thing, you just found your next favorite book! Stefan Wishart is the heir to the throne, but his father, the Prince Consort, despises him. Only when Stefan learns of his true parentage, a deadly pirate, does he realize why the prince hates him. He decides to go on a mission to kill his real father and, in doing so, gain the respect and approval of his adopted father. Yet nothing goes right, and he ends up trapped in his father's memories, searching for a way through them to truth and redemption.
I really enjoyed reading A Dead Man's Tale, particularly during the summer. There's something about the hot summer sun, and beaches in particular, that just scream out "Pirates!" and K.R. Patterson came through in providing them for me. A fun blend of fantasy, adventure, and historical fiction (these pirates seem somewhat similar to those of the Pirates of the Caribbean fame), this book is a great ride from start to finish.
The plot flows at a stop-and-go kind of pace as we focus on one moment and then quickly transition to the next. I was confused by it at first, and the choppy nature of the story threw me off, but after a while I realized that it went well with how confused Stefan was and how his life got thrown into disarray because of the revelations taking place. Definitely give this book a chance if you like pirates, coming of age stories, or adventure in general!
