A Day in the Woods: Coming of Age in Texas, 1966 by Doyle C. Carver revolves around twelve-year-old Bo who is the older and wiser boy of the family and also taller when compared to his other two brothers, Brody and Brady. As the story progresses, readers get to see Bo's role shifting from that of a boy to a man where he is allowed to carry a gun, a knife, and protect his brothers. Let us join Bo, Brody, Brady, and their dad, Mr. Littletree, Uncle Tiny, Jason, Sherry, Murphy, and Wayne on their hunting adventure.
The story is fun and adventurous, and young readers will enjoy being in the woods with Bo and the rest of the characters. The author's detailed and descriptive narration brings the woods alive along with the adventures of the men and the boys. This simple and delightful story of the boys going to hunt in the woods takes readers closer to nature. Bo's coming of age has been woven into the plot seamlessly by the author, and it is an entertaining story that will appeal to both children as well as adults. It captures the simple joys of life that make life worth living. I am sure many readers will be able to connect with the story and it will take them back in time to their own childhood and fill them with nostalgia and many memories.
