A Confusion of Bears: Another Geezer Western Mystery by T.C. McKeon is a beautifully written crime and investigation novel. Retired lawyer Jud Phoenix has to reluctantly leave his fishing cabin in Montana to meet the woman he loves, Dr. Victoria Scott, at the Conundrum Resort. The resort turns out to be a bad place. While Jud must deal with a bear that has played a part in a complicated scheme, his girlfriend is sexually abused and leaves without telling anyone. Jud is caught up in a web of intrigue, murder, and lies, and everyone looks to him to find the perpetrators. Can he navigate the complex universe in which he’s suddenly found himself and resolve the murder mystery?
To write with simplicity and to let characters come out as powerful and the events so intense and captivating as these are takes a lot of skill and T.C. McKeon exhibits mastery of that skill. The writing is far above average, well-written prose with intelligent and plot-driven dialogue interspersed throughout the entire story. The pace is steady and most readers will love how what started as a casual date could escalate into a complicated case. Readers will be caught up by the intensity of emotions coursing through the protagonist as he struggles to make sense of events around him, but the hunt for the killers is what creates the thrill in readers. The author has also used suspense to create reader interest, a device that seems to work like magic. Overall, A Confusion of Bears: Another Geezer Western Mystery is an engaging read.
