Robin is always dressed for the season, always sporting a red coat to bring some cheer. But, it’s Christmas time, and now he wears a Santa hat, too. He’s not planning on taking over Santa’s job, merely planning to help out by taking care of those in need. In Faye Carruthers and Hazel Mattheou’s A Christmas Tale, this robin is full of inventive ideas to help others. His first call comes from one of Santa’s reindeer, who has not only managed to get lost but also lost all the gifts and the very important naughty and nice list. Robin’s first advice, in an attempt to cheer up the reindeer, is to show off his phone, saying, “Don’t panic yet, we still have time,/ we can always order another on Amazon Prime.” The reindeer doesn’t think that’s a good idea, and neither do I, but it is rather funny. Helping others is Robin’s way of bringing Christmas cheer to everyone, including himself. You see, his mission is quite simple; to spread Christmas joy and share a helping wing.
Faye Carruthers and Hazel Mattheou’s picture book, A Christmas Tale, is making Christmas a festive occasion for everyone, even those in need of assistance. Taking the rhyming and lyrical style of another Christmas favorite, Clement Clarke Moore’s nineteenth-century classic, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, the author and illustrator have created a real gem, one that will be cherished and enjoyed for years to come. The language is simple, the context is contemporary (like the smartphone and Amazon Prime), and there is an element of charm and humor to spice things up. The illustrations are spectacular and not only add another dimension to Robin’s mission but also add stories of their own as the images are vivid and creatively depicted. And, the biggest message of all, is how Robin’s mission proves that kindness, caring, and giving are the real meaning of Christmas. Snuggle up and enjoy this treasure with the whole family.
