Desperate times leave most people feeling hopeless but in A Burning Hope by Mathias G.B. Colwell, a weary Slayer discovers friendship and the desire to aim for something different. Maeze has been a Slayer, a hunter of underwater creatures that prey on the blood of humans, for 3 years and is partnered again for the fourth time. As the ruling council and the Grand Investigator make the death tax higher and higher, requiring the death of even more Banelings, every trip out into the marsh is a suicide mission. After spotting an unusual glow on the horizon one evening, Maeze and his partner Aerick begin to wonder if there is something else outside the marsh. An unexpected encounter with the Grand Investigator leads to their sudden departure and several days out on the marshes cause more questions than answers. Will the pair find anything else or is the Fortress the only location where there is any civilization?
A Burning Hope by Mathias G.B. Colwell is a smooth flowing story about a friendship that develops in spite of the harsh realities of life. Men in the lowest class are forced to fight for the survival of the Fortress and Colwell clearly describes the desperation of people who have little hope, as well as how strong the will to survive really is. In simple, straightforward language, Colwell tells the tale of two men who take a chance on finding something new and perhaps better than the life they are currently living. In an environment where there is no love or tenderness, except perhaps early in childhood, a spark of hope ignites, creating optimism that there is an alternative. A great story!
