Bumpy was a rock who sat down on the grass and got in the way of children when they played. Bumpy felt his life was a curse because he didn't mean to spoil games. A tumbling cabbage advised Bumpy that he would be of no use if he sat there and complained and that he should work towards finding his purpose. The cabbage told Bumpy that her purpose was to grow strong and stout and end up in a bowl of steaming casserole. The cabbage encouraged Bumpy not to lose hope and be patient and brave. She told him maybe his future lay at Pebble Beach Bay, which was a stone's throw away. As the story progresses, Bumpy realizes that everyone around him had a purpose. Will he finally be able to find his way to the quiet and peaceful Pebble Beach Bay?
A Bumpy Journey by Maria Bardyukova is an adorable story written in verses that give the story a good pace and rhythm and also speak metaphorically of the bumpy ride that life gives everyone. The illustrations are as captivating as the author's words and readers will find them appealing. I liked the way the cabbage, Bumpy, and other characters in the story have been portrayed and their distinct personalities are memorable. The activities at the end of the storybook make it fun to use in classrooms during interactive sessions and it is also a good book for storytelling and read-aloud sessions at homes, classrooms, and school libraries.
