A Brilliant Alliance by Laura Beers is a Regency romance and the second book in the Lockwood Family series. It can be read as a standalone novel. The Earl of Dunsby, Bennett Lockwood, finds his life shaken when a solitary ride through the woodlands turns into a rescue mission upon discovering an injured and unconscious Delphine, the Countess of Dunrobin. As she recovers in the country home of Bennett’s parents Lord and Lady Dallington, she tries to piece together her past while learning more about the Dallington family. Despite her firm stance against marriage, Delphine finds her affection for Bennett deepening. When people from her past come calling on Delphine to claim her, will Bennet and his family help protect her? Will the budding relationship between Bennett and Delphine survive against all odds?
A Brilliant Alliance by Laura Beers reminded me of an amnesia romance, a trope I like because it offers a mix of emotional depth, suspense, and the heartwarming journey of finding or rediscovering love. This book did not disappoint on any of those counts. Although the story begins at a wedding which flows from the first book in the series, I was pulled into this story by the teasing and banter between Bennett and his siblings. This helped me get an overview of the members of the Dallington family and their relationships before Delphine and her issue of memory loss were introduced. The author maintained a good balance between the light-hearted conversations and the development of the mystery at the center of the plot without rushing through the details. Though this story focuses on Bennett and Delphine, the other siblings, Melody, Elodie, and Winston, are also well thought out and there are hints of individual motivations and potential character developments that the reader can look forward to in the upcoming books in the series.
