I love a good story about a person who has overcome obstacles to follow their dreams. There are so many talented people in the world, it’s not surprising that someone who is deaf or blind can make beautiful music or someone without hands can draw exquisite portraits. Or how about a violinist with only one hand? And there are other obstacles people have to overcome: cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, spinal injuries, and so many others. It’s amazing to appreciate the beauty that people with disabilities share with the rest of the world.

Susan Perry’s nonfiction children’s book, 12 Artists with Disabilities, is an intuitive look at inspiring world-famous artists who have overcome their disabilities to create something beautiful - from deaf percussionist, Evelyn Glennie, world-famous blind pianist, Nobuyuki Tsujil, one-handed violinist, Adrian Anantawan, and deaf dancer, Antoine Hunter, to spinal injury visual artists, like Frida Kahlo and Yinka Shonibare and hand-less portraiture artist, Mariusz Kedzierski, who created through their pain, to the cerebral palsy poet, Yu Xiuhua. This is only a small collection of amazing stories about creativity through endurance and the power of believing in oneself.

Each artist is given a short, interesting biography, in 12 Artists with Disabilities, with some sidebar key points to spark the interest of young readers, including some challenging questions to make them think. Susan Perry presents each artist’s story with clarity, focusing on the key points of the artist’s life, providing just enough information to appeal to young readers. There are also colorful illustrations of the artist and their creative endeavors to accompany each presentation. This collection is marvelously inspirational and informative.
