Zombie Youth: Playground Politics by H.E. Goodhue is set in modern day, small town America. A group of schoolchildren, including two brothers Sam and Mike, ranging from 13 to 18 are trapped inside their school when it is taken over by zombies. Across the world, adults over 20 years old are dropping dead of heart attacks. But they are not staying dead. When they attack the school, the resourceful group of teens band together to fight back. As if the undead wasn't enough, they also have to deal with a group of religious zealots who believe the apocalypse is upon them. Along with a few surviving adults, the teens hatch a plan to take on the zealots and the undead so they can be safe.
H.E. Goodhue tells a fast paced story that deals with the horrifying situation of the dead returning in a world where few adults are left alive. The teens in Zombie Youth: Playground Politics are tough and resourceful and immediately form their own army. They prove wise beyond their years and relationships begin to form while the old rules fall away. While some of the themes are familiar to other zombie survivor stories, the characters are all well drawn and sympathetic. H.E. Goodhue put in a lot of research on weaponry and virology to make it believable but not too complicated to understand for young adults. The zombies are descriptive and the mutations really amp up the carnage. A strong story with a twist in the ending that could lead to a sequel.
