Candida believes in miracles. She was born with a rare condition called Amniotic Band Syndrome, which generally causes death in most babies before they are ever born. She knows that it a beautiful blessing she survived and wants to show the world that her scars are not a punishment, but instead are a wonderful expression exemplifying God’s love and mercy for her life. She believes God spared her for a reason and wants to spend her life telling of the hope and love God placed inside of her.

Zippy’s Club by Candida Sullivan is truly a children’s book that will both educate and captivate the mind of your children for nights on end. Little Zippy does not have any stripes, as would a normal zebra. This makes him a prime target to be picked on by the other cooler animals. He and some of his friends, including Toby, a lizard, are constantly being bullied by the other animals, such as the snakes. Zippy then has the bright idea to not sit back and allow this type of treatment to happen to them. He decides to start a club that is against bullying. At first no one listens to him, especially Toby who thinks that the best way to stop those bullies is to learn how to be rude and mean like the snakes. Zippy does not agree with this tactic, as no good little zebra would. He tries to confront the snakes and, well, no spoilers, but something happens to Zippy that changes everything.
I’m the father of two twin boys (age 3) and we started reading the paperback copy two nights ago. I mention two nights, because in my opinion it is a little thick in size for a three-year-old. I think ages four to six might be able to finish the book in one sitting. The illustrations were perfectly/professionally done and I tip my hat off to illustrator Jack Foster for painting a vivid picture that captures the true storyline of this astounding book. Perhaps it’s the nostalgic feeling of me being picked on as a kid that put a smile on my face when I thought of Zippy starting a club to fight off bullies with kindness. Watching my kids shake their heads while saying it’s wrong to pick on others is memorable. My only question is where was this book when I was growing up?
In closing, this book was educational, fun, inspiring and captivating in a well-written manner that all parents/teachers need to consider for read-aloud time. It is perfect for a classroom setting and at the end of the book there’s a workbook/information section for children to partake in.
