In You Have To Be Smart If You're Going To Be Tall by Jessica Tilley, Ericka is a young girl who happens to be the tallest girl in her class. Because of this, her classmates tease her and make comments about what the weather is like up there. Upset, Ericka goes to her mum and dad and asks them about it. Her dad tells her that she shouldn't worry about it and can't let it affect her. She needs to be smart and deal with the problem. So Ericka takes this to heart and starts learning all about what it is to be tall and why it is a good thing. Armed with knowledge, Ericka always has a smart response for the kids that tease her and makes herself smarter in the process. Her mum and dad then teach her about genes and why she is tall.
Jessica Tilley has created a book which is easy to read in You Have To Be Smart If You're Going To Be Tall and I think it will appeal to children who are worried that they stand out because of their height. Encouraging a child to learn from an experience rather than letting it upset them is a great way to show them how to deal with difficult situations. Ericka is encouraged and reads lots of different books and learns lots of facts. The illustrations are simple but effective and add to the story nicely. I think this would appeal to kids around 5-8 years of age, and it is something they would enjoy, whether they have similar issues or not, as hopefully it will teach them to be nicer to other kids who are different. I think it will do well.
