You Don’t Want to Lose Your Girlish Figure by Mary Edwards Ed.D., Ph.D., is a health and fitness non-fiction book that explores the core of the issues of childhood obesity. As a young child, Mary endured a traumatic experience. She lost the chance to be nurtured and confident. Her story with obesity stems from this lack of healthy relationships in the family. Comments she received from others, including “you don’t want to lose your girlish figure,” impacted her self-esteem. It is hard in today’s world to feel beautiful in one’s own skin. Each country has its own definition of beauty. Women especially try to fit themselves into labels because it is what everyone else does to them. However, in doing so, they may also be putting their self-love, confidence, and true beauty in the garbage.
Mary Edwards says this: “Maintaining your weight and good figure should be primarily something you wish to do for yourself – not for anyone else.” Can I get an amen? Or maybe a hallelujah? Yes, this is precisely what we women need to hear. In You Don’t want to Lose Your Girlish Figure, Mary Edwards makes her point: you do you. We don’t need to prove to anyone else who we are. If you want to become healthier and more in shape, do it for yourself and not anyone else. I know a lot of people need to hear that statement, myself included. There are some breakthroughs in society, like plus-size models who are showing it isn’t just petite that is beautiful, and this book goes a long way to hitting that message home.
