A six-year-old boy, Ayzen Damian Miyashita, and his mother, Dana Damian, wrote X-Power about a young boy, Ay, who lives in England with his crab, Tiger, and longs for superhero powers. He writes to Santa, and Santa grants Ay's Christmas wish, explaining that he need only write his desired form on a paper and touch his nose for the "X-Power" to materialize his thoughts. However, Santa asks that Ay only use his superpower for the good of humankind. Even when it's difficult, Ay tries to honor Santa's request as he transforms into a superhero lightning monster, a potato-eating dragon, a mirror that grants invisibility to shy children, and a robot who cares for children.
Amazingly, Ayzen Damian Miyashito wanted to write and illustrate a book at a young age, but the intentions behind his story were even more commendable. Along with Dana Damian's help, he communicates a valuable lesson that will motivate children. At the end of the book, he focuses on his main idea by asking readers about their wishes for certain superpowers and challenging them to use these for good. The authors - with help from Tiger - developed an "X-power Algorithm" that guides young readers through the process of imagining the good they can do with a superpower. The authors also reveal the real superpowers children already possess and inspire them to make a difference when they use their readily available powers. X-Power is a great selection for readers who enjoy books written from the perspective of young minds and caregivers who hope to inspire children to think more about gently assisting humanity.
