In WWIIAR Eagles by Donald E. Zlotnik, the author has taken a very controversial stance on World War II by showing the perspective from the German side. Like everything in life, there are always two sides to the story. Most of the books that have been written on this subject have been from the side of those in the concentration camps, prisoners of war, and those that survived. The only true horrors that ever reached public perception were those suffered by the Jews, gypsies, Catholics, and anyone else that was against the German Government of the time, but mostly the Jews. Donald E. Zlotnik took the lives of 40 German soldiers who escaped the purge that the Russians inflicted and managed to get back to Germany. He has written about how they survived, what they had to do, and how they assisted each other. The main characters are Thomas Hoechner, Frits Klingenberg, Alex-Paul Baron Berman, Idar Obserstein, and Rolf Zissler to mention but a few.

The author has written a page-turning book that captures the reader from the first page to the last and makes them want to keep reading. Donald E. Zlotnik makes the reader realize that you get good and evil at all levels of society and war will always bring out the bullies who don’t know when to stop and think that war is a license to kill. The book does not condemn or applaud the atrocities that were committed by both the Russians and the Germans during the war but shows the reader that we are all human. This book highlights the good and bad in every person that is involved in a war, whether it was World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and even the current wars in Syria, etc., and how bullies seem to thrive in these situations. I found the courage shown by all to be very moving and inspirational. A very well-thought-out book and so well written from the beginning to the end. Thank you for the most soul-searching read that will linger in my memory long after the book is closed.
