Work & Wagers: David Wagers Case, #1 is a private sleuth mystery novel written by Sherrie Sushko. Victoria Carols was getting over her broken engagement to her fiance, Richard. She had left her home on the California coast to go to school with him in Massachusetts, and had gotten as far as planning a wedding before he moved out of the state and left her behind. She found a part-time paralegal job with an insurance company in New Jersey and set out to make a fresh start. After her first month of the six-month tryout, Victoria knew she didn't want to stay in that job. While she enjoyed the work and interacting with the attorneys, the other paralegals in her team were gossips, and Pam, their leader, seemed a controlling and negative influence on them all. After she was made a full-timer, Victoria was told by Pam that she'd be going to lunch with the team as a regular thing; there was really no other option. She did know that she wasn't the first person in her position, but what she didn't know was that she was replacing a young woman whose brutal murder had never been solved. David Wagers, a private investigator, had been hired by Courtney Tabbin's uncle, who was concerned that the lack of closure was irreparably injuring his sister’s mental health. While Victoria was leery of getting to know anyone after Richard's betrayal, David became an intriguing and friendly companion, and she couldn't help but get involved in his investigation.
Sherrie Sushko's private sleuth mystery novel, Work & Wagers: David Wagers Case, #1, is a tense and absorbing psychological thriller. I enjoyed following Wagers as he proceeded with his investigation and am looking forward to reading about his future cases. The situation Victoria finds herself in at the insurance company is the nightmare of just about any person who's ever found themselves having to work in an office atmosphere and dealt with an office bully. Pam's controlling and scheming nature had me concerned for Victoria's safety almost from the start of this gripping and suspenseful story. Sushko is a gifted storyteller. I quickly became involved in her tale and was reluctant to put it down until I had finished the last words. Work & Wagers: David Wagers Case, #1 is most highly recommended.
