"Words in the Wind" by Yvonne Anderson is the second book of the 'Gateway to Gannah' series. It continues a storyline that I think would make more sense had I started with book one. This should definitely be considered Christian/religious science fiction. With a female protagonist named Dassa, this story takes readers on a ride deep into space and time to explore what happens when science fiction joins Christianity in an adventure that exists internally as well as externally. This often allegorical story captivates readers with detailed imagery and realistic characterization.
I recommend reading this series in order. I love science fiction, but this story had me scratching my head sometimes. Since I read this out of order, there were some terminology issues (half-Earthish), ideas (meahs and toqephs) and confusing references (Kankakar Era, SMEs, the New Gannah) that made my suspension of disbelief difficult at times. The trouble with reading this out of order was that the ending also seemed to leave so many questions unanswered. Even my reading of the two plot lines, from Dassa and from Pic, needed to be tied together. I think the overt Christian themes, with numerous “God willing”s, “Yea Lord, As Thou willest it”, and frequent Biblical language, “Art thou…”, “Nay”, “thou wouldst, wouldst thou not”, etc., were sometimes excessive. That aside, I found this story creative and engaging; a moderate read at almost 300 pages. Anderson presents a unique perspective, but did fall back on some Trek-ish plot devices. Her distinctive voice and perspective did lend a wonderful twist to the genre. The political intrigue, animals talking and plotting, and the emotional aspects of one’s struggle for survival, are all woven together effectively to create inspirational Christian Sci-Fi.
