Are you ready to shed a few tears? Not sad tears, necessarily, but more likely tears of wonder and amazement. Tears of shared sadness, marked by twinges of joy, happiness only found in the connection one can make with a loving dog. In Wonder Dogs, Maureen Maurer tells readers that Tucker was only a puppy when he was taken to a children’s hospital on Christmas Day. His training as a service dog had just begun, but he managed to bring smiles to the faces of those children too sick to go home for the holidays. And, then there was the miracle, the one child who had not been awake for days and had been taken off life support. All Tucker did was lie on her bed and allow the comatose patient to pet his head and a miracle occurred. Dogs are full of wonder and there are many stories of this compassion to share.

Maureen Maurer’s book, Wonder Dogs, is a collection of stories that trace her involvement in training special dogs to do exceptional work. She was once at death’s door and was given a second chance in life before she chose to pursue her childhood dream of training dogs to assist those who need them. She founded Assistance Dogs of Hawaii and Assistance Dogs Northwest, which train dogs to help people with special needs. Through her work, the author has further nurtured her connection to God, finding her purpose in life. The stories she shares are part of her memoir, as well as being a tribute to some pretty amazing dogs that she has trained and worked with. This is a very heartwarming collection of stories and, yes, you do need a box of tissues handy.
