Growing up in southwestern Minnesota on their family’s 25-acre resort on Lake Shetek, Mia and Bella had an ideal childhood. Their summer days were spent helping out around the resort, cleaning the cabins, changing linen, and assisting their grandma, Gigi, in the kitchen. Their afternoons were spent hanging out with their close-knit group of friends, frolicking around at the beach, soaking in every minute of their summer break. It felt like life would always be this carefree and full of unexplored adventures. Everything changed one fateful day when inclement weather led to a fatal boating accident that left Bella dead and marked the beginning of a string of tragedies for Mia, her family, and the Shetek community. In the years that followed, Mia would have a seemingly losing battle with her demons and struggle to fill the void caused by the loss of her sister. Therapy reveals that Mia knows a lot more about the demise of her sister Bella than she was willing to admit, even to herself. It becomes clear that there is someone within their tight-knit community that is living a double life, but who?
A story that is both tragic and beautiful, sorrowful and triumphant, Woman Over the Edge by Quinn Avery explores the unwavering power of the human spirit and our will to rise up despite the sum of our losses imploring us to fall. This story felt real and authentic and most definitely did not follow a predictable formula, which I found refreshing. Quinn Avery expertly weaves a murder-mystery-thriller with a little dose of steamy romance into one exciting and thought-provoking tale. I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in this story and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of her many other novels!
