Winter & George: A Path Across the Sea is written by Natasha Nelson. It is a wonderfully entertaining story about a sister and brother, Winter and George, respectively, who have learned that the sea is a magical place. In this story, underneath a sky where stars twinkle “like tiny golden fairies,” they sit together on the pier and wait for what the magical sea will bring them to explore. They don’t have to wait long. When their adventure begins, it is filled with such brightness and unexpected images and wonders, and the two siblings laugh and play with great delight. But all good adventures have their scary parts. They have that fear of the unexpected. But there is also the desire to be larger than fear and to dare to see what fun and excitement and new friends can be encountered when you’re willing to push past the trepidation. Winter and George decide to push past it. They reach outside their comfort zones, and, in doing so, they gain an exceptional friend.
I enjoyed Winter & George: A Path Across the Sea so very much. Winter and George are quite the harmonic pair of siblings. They listen to each other and depend on one another to help them both get through the newness and challenge of the night’s events. When their adventure came to a close, I couldn’t help but think how much I would love to have had another one of their episodes ready to be read. The illustrations are rich and magical and enchanting, just like the story itself. The color choices of blues and purples will make you believe in the magic of the sea and of the sky. My thanks to Natasha Nelson for such an engaging story.
