Get ready for an emotional journey that is impossible to put down. Wildfire by Adriana Gisselle tells the story of two polar opposite teenagers whose rivalry begins when they are thrown together for a science fair project in the eighth grade. Catherine is the perfect student with a wonderful relationship with her father; she would do anything to make him happy. Rubio barely squeaks by at school, and his home life is less than ideal. Over the years, Catherine’s perfection and Rubio’s jealousy only intensify their hatred for one another, until a tragic event shifts Catherine’s world upside down, destroying all of her plans and motivation. She suddenly begins to see the world from Rubio’s perspective, and Rubio also begins to see Catherine in a different light. With the entire dynamic of their hostile relationship disrupted, neither of them can predict how their senior year in high school will end.
Before you open this book, a large box of tissues is an absolute necessity to have on hand. I have never in my life read anything that comes even remotely close to the level of emotion expressed throughout the pages of Wildfire. Whether you are a young adult or a fully grown adult, you will surely be able to relate to the angst, heartache, tragedy and struggles that these two young people go through in their own journeys just to get through some of the toughest years of their lives. Adriana Gisselle has wonderfully portrayed the relationships between parents, friends, and even enemies, and it’s impossible not to love and hate them all. Underlying messages about self-discovery, acceptance, and change are prominent throughout the story and only strengthen the overall emotional rollercoaster found within the pages. Wildfire is a definite must-read, period. Absolutely one of the best books I have read in a really long time!
