It may seem like such a simple thing to do, but it has so many positive benefits. I’m talking, of course, about bird watching. Mary loves to visit her Grandma, especially during the summer when she can stay overnight. Whatever they do, it’s always accompanied by a different winged friend, like the robin, the cardinal, even the barn owl at night, and the rooster in the morning. For each bird, Mary asks Grandma why she likes them so much. Grandma answers with something original for each bird: for the robin, it’s his song; for the cardinal, it’s his color; for the rooster, it’s his call that gets her granddaughter out of bed in the morning. Mary learns a lot about birds from her Grandma, and when she becomes a Grandma, she passes on this same love of birds on to her grandchildren.
Morgan Goudy’s picture book story, Why Does Grandma Love Birds?, is a lovely story about a special bond shared between a young girl and her Grandma. The visits are special, even more so because of the shared interest in birds and the patience with which Grandma answers each of her granddaughter’s questions. The colorful illustrations help carry the events along and the birds shared in this story are carefully depicted so a young reader will learn to identify them. The story is about simple pleasures like bird watching and spending special time with a beloved family member. The simple language used and the repetitive use of the same question, “Grandma, why do you love …?”, will help young readers learn to read this story themselves. Beautifully told.
