Whore of Babylon by Azaria Frost is a beguiling tale of love and loss during the time of oppressive conquerors and rulers in ancient Sumeria. Growing up in Nippur, Eliana and her sister, Kisha, have their lives shattered when Samsu, an invading prince from Babylonia, takes their beloved town by force. Drawn to Kisha’s beauty, Samsu marries her in a ceremony binding her to him as his concubine. Eliana, desperate to see her sister, makes the foolish mistake of breaking into the palace. She finds herself at Samsu’s mercy because the man is obsessed with her uncanny resemblance to a long lost love. As time passes, the sisters learn to survive in this harsh environment, subject to a great many abuses by their captors. When lives are threatened though, will Eliana be able to find the courage to defend them all?
Miss Frost’s tale is captivating from page one. I was drawn into the horrible existence of those forced to abide by the draconian rule of a warlord. Eliana’s spirit never wavered, even when subjected to the most horrible things. I enjoyed the subtle twists in the story as the sisters lived in fear every day of spies and assassination attempts. My only suggestion would be for Frost to flesh out some of the descriptive details. The chosen time period was often lost in the action of the story. Whore of Babylon is a chilling tale of survival and romance. Sensitive readers should be warned there are descriptions regarding the abuse of women.
