When Denise Wentz inherits her aunt's Victorian home in Turtleback Island off the coast of South Carolina, she is sure that it would make a wonderful Bed and Breakfast, so she sinks her money into renovations, and Ocean's Rest B&B is born. Business is great for a while; that is until the guests start thinking they see ghosts. The business goes downhill fast and Denise knows she might lose everything. She calls her friend Agatha Blanchard and asks for her help in figuring out what might be going on. Aggie invites two of her close friends Alexandra and Dorothea (Ducky) to go with her for a week to help solve the mystery. The gals really expect a simple answer but when they arrive Alex does a little sleuthing and learns that there are a few missing women on the island, along with an unsolved murder that took place on the beach in front of the B&B. As Alex and Ducky continue to dig, they uncover a clue that ties into the B&B. With several suspects and little to go on, can Alex solve a mystery that has puzzled local police?
"Who Done It" is a very well-written cozy mystery with a few suspects that kept this reader guessing who actually committed the crime, right up to the end. Each of the characters stands out unique, from fifty seven year old Alexandra who describes herself as a bit overweight and loves to read cozy mysteries, to Ducky who is an eighty year old who never has a hair out of place, loves to imbibe and is as spunky as a thirty year old. The plot of this one moves along at a brisk pace, with vivid descriptions that bring not only the setting but the characters to life! The relationship that started to develop between Alex and Eugene the gardener seemed realistic. I could almost hear him going on and on about his roses, and the way Alex really waffled back and forth about him. I thought it was cute that her friends teased her about the relationship. I loved the setting of the sleepy little beach town, and could easily imagine Alex tooling around town on her bike. Theresa Jenner Garrido does an amazing job of feeding just enough information that kept me guessing while also creating lively dialogue between the characters. I loved the quirky sayings that Ducky or Alex often provide and found myself laughing a few times. Overall, a great cozy mystery that isn't easy to solve. It is filled with interesting characters and that makes it a great read. I hope the author will turn this book into a series because I think Ducky and Alex have more than a few adventures left in them!
