Author Biography

I have always loved reading and creating stories. Reading can be an amazing way of 'escaping' for a few hours.

The idea for my first novel, 'White Plains' came about in my early twenties. My previous attempt at writing had been in my late teens when I'd started writing a novel but never finished. I later worked out this was because of a few reasons, the main being it wasn't the genre for me. It took many years and lots of re-writes, as well as the desire to learn, not just about writing but about the publishing world. When I was able to I paid for some professional editorial work and that, along with help from people I knew, is what got 'White Plains' into a publishable state.

After a lot of hard work and many hours writing and editing, I decided to send my book out to agents. It was very well received, with some encouraging comments, but unfortunately the full manuscript wasn't requested. I considered sending to different agents, but then researched self-publishing and after doing an online course I decided to take this route for my novel.

I'm thrilled to have published an ebook version of 'White Plains' on Amazon and Kobo and am really pleased with the response it has already received. I am currently working on making it available as a paperback whilst continuing to work on my next novel, a young adult sci-fi!

White Plains by Rebecca Perkin is a good fantasy tale for young adult readers. I like stories where someone from our version of Earth is taken to another world. The connection to our place and time makes the protagonist’s actions and reactions understandable, but the setting of another world also gives us that necessary feeling of wonder, adventure, and the fantastic. Rebecca Perkin uses the idea of portals through time and space to send Samuel, a teenager from our world, to White Plains, a world where magic is more advanced than here on Earth. White Plains is at war and Samuel is thrust right into the middle of things before he can even understand what is happening.

I liked White Plains. I liked the protagonist, Samuel. He is just a teenage boy with no dreams of being a hero, but when fate places him in a desperate situation where a hero is needed, he steps up to the plate. To be honest, the girl from White Plains, who befriends him and takes care of him after he goes through the portal, is the real hero. Alexis was born for the job. She has trained for it and is good at it. I liked the technique Rebecca Perkin uses of explaining the world of White Plains and the situation there to the reader through the conversations between Samuel and Alexis as their friendship grows. The action is non-stop. The characters are interesting, and the plot moves at a breathtaking pace. A good, fun book.
