Whispers of an Unfinished Tale by Spandana M L is a refreshing tale of youthful unrequited love. Set primarily in a school, the main character, Roohi, falls fast and deep for her classmate, Karan. At first, they exchange stolen glances during lab, and he asks Roohi for answers, which she quickly obliges. All signs point toward a connection until Sushi, another girl, enters the equation. When Roohi sees Karan with Sushi numerous times and witnesses Sushi running her hands through his hair, Roohi believes Karan must be in a relationship, regardless of her feelings for him. But news soon gets out that Karan was snubbed by Sushi because she already had a boyfriend at a different school. Roohi learns the truth and sees an opening for herself with Karan but is not ready to express her deep feelings for him yet. Unfortunately, one of her best girlfriends tells him!
Without giving anything away, Whispers of an Unfinished Tale by Spandana M L offers a new perspective on the timelessness of unrequited love. What I liked most about this short story is the character development and the amount of dialogue. Both Roohi's and Karan's characters are well-developed. I can almost hear the way Karan softly speaks Roohi's name. Her internal dialogue about the depth of her feelings for Karan is palpable. This story is relatable for most people. Who hasn't had their heart broken in the name of unrequited love? The dialogue and situations between Roohi and school friends Coco and Momo are realistic. Adding up starry-eyed love, miscommunication, plus betrayal equals the sweet sum of Whispers of an Unfinished Tale.
